A wicker helmet (Mahiole) of plaited fibre from Hawaii. Helmets such as this were covered with a net of bark fibre and feathers or human hair. This example never had feathers. Collected in 1778 during Cook's third voyage to the Pacific, it remained in the collectin of Mrs Cook and was part of the Cook collection exhibited at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886.
