Malagan figure carved from the wood alstonis scholaris. A kap kap is painted on the chest to represent the style of body ornament worn by men of New Ireland. The figure clasps a vievem rod, these are found throughout malagan sculpture, normally acting as supports. The struts represent the support given to the body of the deceased as part of a ceremony where they are transported through the village. Purchased from Captain Farrell in 1887. Northern New Ireland Province, PNG.
