Malagan hornbill mouthpiece made from wood, shell, lime, ochre, black paint, feathers and resin. These mouthpieces are often used in ceremonial dance. The dancer clasps the mouth in his teeth and sways from side to side, mimicking the movement of the bird. Purchased from Captain Farrell in 1887. Northern New Ireland Province, PNG.
